Juan Luna’s Una Bulaqueña
Also known as La Bulaqueña or the “Woman from Bulacan,” Juan Luna’s painting of a Filipina woman is often associated with Maria Clara, the heroine of Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere. The woman in the portrait wears the traditional Filipiniana, which comprises four pieces of clothing. Luna painted the Una Bulaqueña from November 1895 to the first months of 1896. It is one of his few paintings that capture Filipino culture and heritage.
While the National Museum of Fine Arts is its permanent home base, the serene portrait of a woman was exhibited at the Louvre Abu Dhabi from June 2025 to June 2026.
