Things to do in Dumaguete: Must-Visit spots for first-timers
Here’s a list of Dumaguete tourist spots you shouldn’t miss:
Rizal Boulevard
Location: Rizal Boulevard, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental
Did you know that Jose Rizal used to frequent Dumaguete and walk along this boulevard? That’s why this walkway by the sea was named after him. If you’re looking for a serene park where you can admire the sea, sample local street food, and watch the sunset, the Rizal Boulevard is the place to be. Don’t forget to take a photo at the huge “#DumaGetMe” sign here for that tourist photo!
Silliman University
Location: Hibbard Avenue, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental
While you’re in the boulevard area, you might as well go and visit Silliman University. It’s quite odd to visit an educational institution during a vacation, but it’s one of the city’s most famous tourist destinations. Built in 1901, Silliman University is teeming with history that will help you get to know the city more. It’s the first American school in the Philippines, and its anthropology museum features archaeological artifacts from Negros and Mindanao.
If you’re traveling with kids, Silliman University also has its own zoo, which houses endangered Philippine native animals.
Campanario de Dumaguete
Location: Dumaguete Belfry, corner Perdices St, Dumaguete City
History buffs, see the oldest bell tower in Visayas that was built in the 1760s. Before becoming a bell tower, Campanario was originally constructed as a watch tower to warn locals of Moros from Mindanao who tried to take over the city. It’s also located near Rizal Boulevard, making it easy to walk to when going on a city tour.
Cata-al World War 2 Museum
Location: Jose Romero Road, Valencia, Negros Oriental

This museum showcases a vast collection of artifacts collected by the owners over the years. A father-and-son duo has been collecting artifacts around the municipality, amassing a collection of ammunition, equipment, and even bones. You don’t even need a guide when you visit here, because the son, Felix, would be more than glad to guide you through their expansive collection. It’s the perfect activity to learn a thing or two about history!
Entrance: Free, but donations are accepted
Balinsasayaw Twin Lakes Natural Park

Aside from historical sites, Dumaguete also has various natural attractions that will take your breath away. The Philippines is home to vibrant marine life, and one of the best places to experience it is at Apo Island. Usually a day trip, Apo Island is a marine sanctuary that’s a hotspot for divers. Here, you can witness colorful corals, fish, and turtles. You can also go for a short 10 to 15-minute hike to get panoramic views of the island.
Apo Island is just a 45-minute boat ride from Dumaguete. It’s best to book a day tour online or with an agency, which already includes a packed lunch and snorkeling gear.

Another popular activity here is dolphin watching, so make sure you try that out, too.

Perhaps you’ve already heard of this popular pasalubong made from cashew nuts and cake crumbs. Before you fly back to Manila, make sure to visit the original branch on San Jose Street, where you’ll find Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries.
What to eat in Dumaguete: Must-try dishes in Dumaguete
The breakfast staples: Puto maya, budbud, and sikwate
You know what they say: you also need to eat like the locals to experience a new destination entirely. For a classic Dumagueteño meal, wake up early, head to the public market, and order breakfast staples at Painitan. Start the day with puto maya (sticky rice made with coconut milk), budbud (sticky rice and millet grain wrapped in banana leaves), and sikwate or hot chocolate. Puto maya is usually topped with either condensed milk or peanut butter and paired with hot chocolate. That’s the perfect breakfast combo for those with a sweet tooth!
Chicken inato
It seems that grilled chicken is a staple in Negros. While Bacolod has chicken inasal, Dumaguete has chicken inato. Head to Jo’s Chicken Inato for the most authentic experience – it’s the first branch that opened in 1993.
Binakhaw
We know kinilaw as the local dish made of raw fish and coconut milk. Just like other dishes, different provinces have their take on it too – “binikhaw” in Dumaguete. While the usual kinilaw dish is served with the vinegar, it is drained when preparing binikhaw after the fish “cooks.” Dungon fruit is then added to the mixture, and it is topped with dried bangasi or flying fish instead of chicharon.
Sansrival Cake
Meaning “without rival” in French, the sansrival cake is a must-try when in Dumaguete. It’s made of layers of buttercream, chopped cashews, and meringue, and you can have the best slice from Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries.
Silvanas
No trip to Negros is complete without silvanas. It’s essentially a sansrival but in cookie form, and it’s the perfect treat to be paired with coffee. You can also order this at Sans Rival café!
BONUS:
Buglas Isla

Buglas Isla isn’t a dish but a cafe recommendation. It’s one of the city’s most popular cafes, which lets diners experience heritage through its food and interiors. This café is an old heritage house that features well-preserved wooden interiors. It also opens to a peaceful garden, creating a seamless blend between the indoors and outdoors. Buglas Isla serves an all-day brunch menu and hand-crafted espresso drinks.
