Good news: You can explore Singapore’s diverse culture without spending too much (or anything at all)!

Named the most expensive city in the world for the ninth time by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Singapore is often considered an expensive travel destination. However, the Little Red Dot is not exclusive to crazy rich Asians. There are plenty of places and activities tourists can enjoy for free in Singapore!

So if you’re on a budget, maximize your stay in Singapore and add these to your itinerary:

8. Witness the enchanting light display at Gardens by the Bay

Treat yourself for free to a magical evening by watching the Garden Rhapsody – a music and light show in the Supertree Grove every day at 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm. The theme changes every month, which gives you a reason to go back every time you visit Singapore. For March, the Supergrove trees are taking us to the golden age of music – the Romantic era.

7. Marvel at the Marina Bay Sands Light Show

If the Garden Rhapsody left you wanting more, you should definitely watch the Marina Bay Sands’ water and light show Spectra. The 15-minute show plays daily at 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, they offer an extra show time at 10:00 pm. Best part? It’s free!

6. Prove that you’re in Singapore by visiting the Merlion Statue

They say you haven’t really been to Singapore if you haven’t seen the Merlion statue. Located at Merlion Park in Marina Bay, the iconic statue’s fish-like body symbolizes Singapore’s history as a fishing village known as Temasek (from the Malay root word tasek meaning lake), while its lion head represents the country’s original name Singapura (a Sanskrit word meaning ‘lion city’). To avoid the crowds, it is best to go in the early morning or late at night.

5. Experience South Asia at Little India

With its vibrant streets, rich culture, and mouth-watering food options, you can never go wrong with Little India. Food enthusiasts can indulge themselves with authentic Indian cuisine while shopaholics can shop ’til they drop at the Mufasa Center– a 24-hour shopping mall. The neighborhood adorned with colorful murals is also one of the many Instagrammable spots in Singapore.

4. Spice up your IG feed at Kampong Gelam

Perfect for a self-photoshoot, the Gelam Gallery (located in the back alleys of Muscat Street) offers a wide array of colorful and intricate murals by local and international artists. While in the area, tourists can also explore the famous Haji Lane and feast on a variety of Arab cuisines, quirky boutiques, and unique cafes.

3. Bask in multiple cultures in Chinatown

Chinatowns are often packed with bustling crowds, food stalls, and souvenir shops. Singapore’s Chinatown is no different, but this district boasts a beautiful blend of culture, with a single street that has a Hindu temple, mosque, and Buddhist temple. And for those seeking a vibrant nightlife, the Ann Siang Hill and Club Street, filled with funky shops and restaurants, is definitely a must-visit.

2. Feel the world on your feet at the Macritchie Treetop Walk

For thrill-seekers and nature lovers, the Macritchie Reservoir Park is an excellent place to spend time. There are plenty of routes to choose from in this green nest, depending on the difficulty and distance. The most famous one is the Treetop Walk, which connects the reservoir’s two highest points. The trail, stretching for 7km, is only for people with strong hearts who can withstand heights. There is no entrance fee, so you can freely enjoy the scenery!

1. Be one with nature at Singapore Botanic Gardens

Known as the oldest garden in the country, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is a haven for all things plant that the plantitas and plantitos can surely enjoy. It is the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage site, so tourists are highly encouraged to visit and book one of their guided walking tours for free!
