The original hotel closed in 2014.

Here’s the thing: you don’t really have to leave the city to get a much-needed breather, especially when you have a variety of five-star stays within reach. Such is the newly revamped Mandarin Oriental, slated to re-open right in the heart of Makati City on December 14, 2026. As we wait a few more months before it opens to the public again, here’s what we know so far.

A legendary return

Originally designed by National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin, the Mandarin Oriental first opened in Makati City in 1976 and served as a landmark hotel in the Makati Central Business District (CBD) before closing down in 2014.

Why did the Mandarin Oriental close down before?

After a nearly four-decade run, the original Mandarin Oriental closed its doors in 2014 to make way for a redevelopment. The reopening was initially set for 2020 with a plan “that will include 80,000 sq meters of highest grade office space and a 275-room brand-new 5-star Mandarin Hotel”. However, it was pushed back to 2026.

Here’s what to expect at the revamped Mandarin Hotel

Fast forward to twelve years later, a refreshed and modern Mandarin Oriental is reopening at the Ayala Triangle Gardens later this year, just in time for the holidays.

“Its return is therefore more than the opening of a hotel—it is the return of a beloved part of the Makati story, almost like a friend and family member,” Creative Director of Ayala Land Hospitality Paloma Urquijo Zobel de Ayala in a statement.

The brand-new Mandarin Oriental features 275 elegantly designed suites and guestrooms that boast contemporary Filipino luxury. Its design is inspired by nature, and will incorporate natural elements and feature woven elements that highlight local craftmanship.

Guests staying at select rooms and suites will also have access to an exclusive Club Lounge and personal 24-hour butler service.
