Whether you’re visiting for history, entertainment, gastronomy, or shopping, Japan remains a top travel destination for Filipinos. We all know that Philippine citizens need a Japanese visa for tourism, and visa applications can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. But the wait is worth it since service fees start at PHP800, making it one of the most affordable visa applications for Filipinos. However, recently, news of the Japanese government’s plans to bump up the prices on fees for foreign nationals has been causing alarm for tourists. Should Filipinos be worried? Here’s everything you need to know about it.

An increase in visa fees for foreign nationals

Travelers planning to go to Japan need to set aside extra funds for pre-trip expenses, as the Japanese government just approved a fivefold increase in its visa fees, beginning July 1, 2026. For the first time in 48 years, the single-entry visa application fee will increase from 3,000 yen (about PHP1,170) to 15,000 yen (about PHP5,850).

Meanwhile, a multiple-entry visa application will increase from 6,000 yen (about PHP2,340) to 30,000 yen (about PHP11,364)

During a press conference, Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu shared that the increase is in response to changes in foreign exchange rates and rising prices. After all, it is its first revision since the prices were set in 1978.

What happens to existing Japanese visa applications?

The price increase will only apply to applications submitted on or after July 1, 2026.

What does this mean for Pinoys?

In case you didn’t know, Japan tourist visa application is FREE for Filipinos and, as of writing, remains free. The usual fees paid is the agency fee, which costs PHP 800 at VFS Global, as of writing.

The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines hasn’t announced any changes in visa fees for Philippine passport holders.

Are there other ways for Pinoys to enter Japan?

As of May 2026, Pinoys can secure an e-Visa for a single-entry stay for up to 15 days, as long as they book or join a packaged group tour through an accredited travel agency.
