This small city in the mountains has a small town charm. Takayama managed to preserve its traditional ambiance, especially in the old town. The city rose to prominence during Japan’s feudal epoch because of the top-notch timber and skilled carpenters that lived in it. Wander in the old town and see the traditional houses, shop for souvenirs and enjoy the cool mountain weather.
