Formerly a penal colony known as the Devil’s Island of French Indochina, the Con Dao archipelago is now leaning more toward being a peaceful settlement. Access is limited to the islands, thus making it a rather quiet town. The largest island, Con Son, is where most of the activities are and where most tourists go around.

Con Dao is where you’ll find the best diving spots in Vietnam, so if you’re there, try to go deep down into the sea. Visit the Revolutionary Museum to learn more about the island’s history, which includes Marco Polo supposedly making Con Dao one of his stops before going back to Venice. If you decide to go between May and October, you can watch sea turtles lay their eggs as the first ones hatch and swim around the sea.
